Paralyzed with shock

Today is Sunday.

Today for the first time they took me out into the sun.

And for the first time in my life the sky

Was so far away from me

And so blue

And so vast that I stood paralyzed

With shock.

Then, respectfully, I sat upon the ground,

Leaning my back against the wall.

This is not a moment to think of happenings,

Not a moment to dwell on battle, or freedom, or my lover.

The soil, the sun and me…

I am fortunate…

Nazim Hikmet, “Today is Sunday” (English translation: E. Geddes)
