Civilian

Civilian

by Karin Karakaşlı

They won’t look like much, no matter what you do

School skirts

If you roll them up at the waist

Or take them in

They’re still that same mousey gray

Ne etsen bir şeye benzemez
okul etekleri
Üstten kıvırdığında da
daralttığında da değişmez
Hep o aynı faremsi gri

You know what it is to try to stand out

After so many generations

It’s like you’re seeing a bit of your girlhood

That domesticated madness

Çabalı farklılık nedir bilirsin
Kaç kuşak sonrasında
Biraz da genç kızlığındır
baktığın, evcil deli

Times in civilian clothes can be tough as well

And quite the effort

What we call being yourself

Hâlâ zor sivil zamanlar
Ve çok sefil bir gayret
Kendi olmak dediğin

The first shot they took at us was with those gray school skirts

İlk darbendir gri okul etekleri
