Deck passengers

Büyük İnsanlik by Nazim Hikmet

The Great Humanity

The great humanity travels as deck passengers by ship

By train in third class

By foot on the roads

Great humanity.

Büyük insanlık gemide güverte yolcusu
tirende üçüncü mevki
şosede yayan
büyük insanlık.

The great humanity goes to work at age eight

Marries at twenty

Dies at forty

Great humanity.

Büyük insanlık sekizinde işe gider
yirmisinde evlenir
kırkında ölür
büyük insanlık.

There is plenty of bread for everyone but the great humanity

And so it is with rice

And so with sugar

And with cloth

And books

There is enough for everyone but great humanity.

Ekmek büyük insanlıktan başka herkese yeter
pirinç de öyle
şeker de öyle
kumaş da öyle
kitap da öyle
büyük insanlıktan başka herkese yeter.

The great humanity casts no shadow upon the ground

No lamplights in her streets

No glass in her windows

But there is hope in the great humanity

Life can’t be lived without hope.

Büyük insanlığın toprağında gölge yok
sokağında fener
penceresinde cam
ama umudu var büyük insanlığın
umutsuz yaşanmıyor.
